Travel Guide: Barcelona

Summary

Barcelona, the sunny Catalan capital, has a mild climate year-round. It has jaw-dropping architecture, trendy restaurants with mouth-watering tapas and a beachy, Mediterranean atmosphere. The restaurants and bars that we went to were a level up from other cities. Barcelona just does things right when it comes to food and drink. Barcelona has a handful of beaches close to the city center and a boardwalk that attracts runners and active-types. Also, one of Europe’s best food markets, La Boqueria is found in the bustling neighbourhood of El Raval, which is another attraction that Barcelona has to offer!

Food & Drink

Top Restaurants

1 El Xampanyet • Legendary tapas experience. We stood at the stand-up bar, pointed at food behind the glass counter and got served unlimited refills of their homemade sparkling wine called 'xampanyet'. The experience was like speed eating & drinking, as the plates came out fast and the bartenders were unbelievably precise and fast with how their served and poured. All the plates were so delicious. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, but it's smallish and doesn't take reservations, so this place may not be ideal for large groups.

2 Disfrutar • I've been told by a friend that this is the best culinary experience in the world. No. 5 on the Top 50 restaurant list. Book weeks or months in advance.

3 Eldiset • Classic wine bar serving wines only from the Catalonia region of Spain. The food is incredibly tasty.

Top Bars

1 Paradiso • Ranked no. 3 on the Top 50 bars list. Very great bar with good design and drinks. When we went, the menus had a built-in light, so the menu lit up while reading it—novel idea that worked well!

2 Two Schmucks • This bar was incredible. It has the sort of 'cool, chill, trendy vibe' that every upbeat and popular bar should have. The drinks were complex and very well done.

3 Dr Stravinsky • One of my favourite places. The bartender told us that all their alcohols are handmade and that they don't make any classics because they only have their homemade spirits. Their drinks are very creative because of their spirit selection. The ambience and location are amazing too.

Markets

1 La Boqueria • One of Europe’s best food markets. A tourist attraction due to its location on the bustling La Rambla. Find a seat at one of the many countertops serving great food.

2 Santa Caterina Market • Distinctive for its vibrantly coloured and undulating rooftop design. This market has a vivid and lively atmosphere with great food options.

3 Mercat de Sant Antoni • Reopened in 2018 after major renovations, this market has tons of fresh produce stalls and is definitely worth the visit!
